DAY 659

June 22

1) So this evening, on the recommendation of our good friend Nina, we went for a hotpot at the famous Haidilao Hotpot (海底捞火锅). Apparently, they are famous for their hospitality, and it was immediately apparent as we entered the restaurant. We were given aprons to wear, and even our bags received some pampering, being covered by a nice warm cloth!

2) Nina and her friend, Lyn Lee, made most of the orders for us. In the end, we had a whole assortment of meats and vegetables, including loads of seafood and even some really exotic dishes! Pig brain, anyone? We ordered three different types of soup - beef stock, tomato soup broth, and "mala" soup (which literally translates to "numbing spicy soup"). I personally enjoyed the tomato soup the most, as did the rest of us.

3) We first had to create our own dipping sauces, and we were encouraged to experiment and combine different kinds of sauces. I tried mixing the sesame sauce with peanut sauce, with a drizzle of fish sauce and chives as garnish. The taste was really good in my opinion. Over the course of the meal, we tried some really interesting dishes, including pork belly skin and pig brains :) Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the brains - it was first boiled in the soup, before being served with some curry powder. If it was finely chopped, I'd suspect people would not find anything strange about it!

4) We finished off with a nice serving of noodles. A chef came out, all decked out in his uniform, to stretch the noodles and perform for us. He then left the noodles to cook in the soup. I enjoyed drinking the tomato soup after all of the food was cooked in it, as its own flavour was enhanced. After all this, we had time to enjoy some really sweet fruits as dessert. It was a rather heavy meal, but an awfully satisfying one at that.

5) Next on our agenda was a trip to Eslite Bookstore (誠品書店) - one of the largest retail bookstores in Taiwan, with a branch in Suzhou. We went there specifically because it was the 75th Anniversary of the famous novella "The Little Prince", and so there was a little expo in the bookstore. After all these years, I have not heard of this book before, so I had to Google it to find out its story. After spending some time perusing the books and expo itself, we stopped at "Kiwi Kraze" to have frozen yogurt. It wasn't as cheap as I would have liked, but neither was the hotpot haha. It tasted awesome though :)

6) Finally, it was time to leave, and we made our way back home. That is the end of my blog update for today, and thanks as always for visiting. Have a nice day, cheers! :D

The one and only - Haidilao Hotpot :)

As though we made the dishes ourselves ^^

That's an insane amount of food if you ask me XD

Luckily we brought our appetites with us :)

Everything looks good after cooking :))

The bill came to that... :')

If my Mandarin is any good, this should roughly translate to the following,
" Is this... a hat? The obverse side may not be as simple as that!"

More group photos ^^

Mirror mirror in the wall, who is the fairest of them all? ^^

Four flavours - watermelon, milk, kiwi, and chocolate ^^

DAY 34

Oct 5

1) Today was a relatively easy day for me. Woke up early as usual, before going for my usual jog at St. Stephen's Green. I was planning to do more rounds, but after that grueling 15 km run on Sunday, I could only manage 5 km today. I have to start training for the Run in the Dark event this coming November. Anyway, finished my run, had some cereal, before prepping for class.

2) Lecture started at 10 a.m., during which we were briefed on how we would be assessed in our upcoming Mid-Term Quiz. I still cannot believe that barely a month has passed and we are already plagued with exams, quizzes, formative assessments and the like. I guess they were right when they said medical school wouldn't be easy haha. Went to the anatomy room together with friends, and spent some time analysing and discussing what we had been taught.

3) A lecture after that, and it was my favourite time of the day, lunchtime! The queue at AK. Henry's was unusually long, but I suppose everyone was famished too. I had to wait patiently for about 15 minutes for my sandwich (et frites of course). There are so many choices available for sandwiches: you can choose white or brown bread, with mayo, butter or plain, a meat option and two veggie options, toasted or not, and with or without fries. And all for just €3.00! That would explain why the queue for sandwiches is usually the longest compared to the others.

4) Had a really satisfying lunch, before one more lecture for the day! It feels great to end class early, and I did not waste anytime in going to Tesco after that, to get some milk and bread. I still have some peanut butter and nutella, so that should take care of my breakfast from now on. The extra food will come in handy for my training I reckon. By this time, I made up my mind to have an early dinner. Went down to the kitchen to cook rice, steamed some broccoli, cauliflower and carrots, before making some tomato soup. Today's meal was plain and simple, but nonetheless nutritious (or so I hope haha).

5) Finished dinner, before coming back to my room to study. My card signing event is next Friday, and it involves a surgeon prosector asking you the various anatomical locations and functions of the body, either by using cadavers or preserved specimens. I am not looking forward to that, but I shall definitely try my best. Surely it can't be that bad, right? Anyway, that is all the time I have for today, and I look forward to relating my cycle of events tomorrow. Thanks for reading, and goodnight!

I don't think I'll get tired of the sandwiches anytime soon,
although I might run out of captions for it XD

DAY 32

Oct 3

1) Today was a typical school day. Woke up earlier than usual since class started at 8 a.m. Lectures went non-stop until 2 in the afternoon. I felt so sleepy during this time. Not to mention hungry.

2) After lessons, my friends took me to a restaurant called Dicey's Garden, where they had student deals for lunch, with huge portions, and only €5.00! I had the beef curry with rice and chips, and it certainly was HUGE! Ate to my heart's content, and my friends went back after that. I stayed on at RCSI to study, since I had a tutorial on how to use EndNote for referencing.

3) EndNote turned out to be rather complicated, so I'm going to have to review the lecture slides later on. Came back home and decided I would make a simple soup for dinner. Made some tomato soup, and that was enough for the day. Later, I discovered I had misplaced my computer mouse, most probably at the Computer Lab, where I attended the tutorial. I certainly hope to get it back soon, but it was my carelessness that got me into this mess in the first place. I'll be more careful next time.

4) The last part of the day is about me trying to study. I don't think I'm good at it, but I can at least try. Tomorrow's lessons also begin at 8 a.m., and I'm not looking forward to waking up so early in the morning. Oh well, cest la vie I guess. That's all for today, and goodnight!

Underneath the mountain of chips lies
a heapful of beef curry and a huge portion of rice,
all for only €5!
