DAY 184

Mar 4

1) Today has been a very eventful day for me. So I had to wake up early to make it for the RCSI-MUN (Model United Nations) which started at 9.00am. Our motion for today was "Battling Antibiotic Resistance", and each candidate was assigned a country to represent. So Mary and I were the delegates of Canada, and there were various representatives from all over the world - including USA, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Trinidad and Tobago, France etc.

2) We broke the motion up into several subtopics and discussed from there. Essentially we tried to follow the guidelines and conduct of the real United Nations. For instance, we raised our placards when intending to speak, and referred to ourselves as "this delegate" rather than using the pronoun "I". And of course, we drafted out a working paper, which was to become a resolution as a whole.

3) Fast forward a couple of hours, and we had lunch in the Atrium. This was a good time to get to know everyone better, and I made a lot of friends (mostly senior or GEM students) from various backgrounds. It was very exciting to meet so many people with this much enthusiasm for this event. After break, discussion resumed and we carried on with the submission of our final resolution, which had been amended and modified to take into consideration the other countries' suggestions/ideas.

4) Finally at late noon, we went into actual voting procedure. Our resolution had received a unanimous vote (which is very rare in MUN - most of them are just majority votes) as almost everyone agreed with the proposed solution and the method by which it would be implemented! In a usual MUN setting, the entire objective is to draft out a resolution which can get accepted or declined, depending on the number of votes we receive. In our case, you could say we were extremely successful since essentially everyone agreed with our resolution :D

5) That was the end of this year's MUN - and I cannot wait for the next one to come around. The rest of the day I have no choice but to work on my Principal Seminars, because they are drawing closer and closer as the days go by. DAY 183

Mar 3

1) Today has been a fun day for me. Went to Mercer Library as usual to to do two things: prepare for Principal Seminar and also to prepare for RCSI MUN (Model United Nations) tomorrow. I'll be representing the delegate of Canada, and we'll be discussing about Antibiotic Resistance. Hopefully it'll be loads of fun and I'll get to make new friends haha.

2) In the afternoon, I met up with my friends in the Study Room upstairs and we each tried to present on the five topics for the Principal Seminar. We're sorted it out for the most part, but there is still some fine tuning to be done. Then at around 5.00pm, Nee Kee, Esther and I left for UCD to attend a talk - "The Medic's Guide" - which taught us the skills required to be competent doctors as well as the opportunities available.

3) There were a total of five speakers - the first was Mr. Mark Cumisky, Career and Skills Consultant, who talked about "Medical Specific CV Writing and Interview Skills". Next was Stage 3 Medical Student Ms. Lade Adeusi (UCD), who elaborated on the relevance of research and publication in early medical life. After a brief intermezzo where we had some nice 'nasi lemak' or coconut milk rice, the session continued with three Malaysian doctors currently working in Ireland, narrating their experience as well as the path they took to achieve their goals. The last doctor - Doctor Kevinder Singh, was of particular interest as he was a former PMC student just like us.

4) After his talk, some of my friends went to ask questions on the opportunities available and his recommendation on what to do next after graduation. Still a long way to go, but you can never start too early. All in all, a very informative event and I took back quite a lot from it. I have also obtained a clearer picture of what to expect and the challenges ahead when we graduate with our degree. On that note, I'll end my blog update here. DAY 182

Mar 2

1) Today has been another great day for me. It all started out as another normal day, with me packing my stuff and leaving for the library. Then at around 10.30am, we had another Lion Dance rehearsal session, where we finally(!) finished off the remaining moves. Now all that's left to do is practice, practice and more practice XD Shortly after, I received news that I had won the Anatomy Sketch Competition, organised by the BioSoc RCSI! So my prize is one College Ball ticket, for the RCSI College Ball this Saturday. Still contemplating if I should go or not, because not many of my friends are going...

2) Anyway, besides that awesome piece of news, my day has been going on pretty much as usual. Took a short nap in the afternoon and studied a little until the evening. Later on, I walked to RCSI for second Lion Dance rehearsal in one day. This was meant for us to familiarise ourselves with the conditions on stage, as we'll be dancing together with the other performers. Anyway, it was much shorter compared to the first rehearsal in the morning, and I'm happy to say we're mostly done. All that's left is some polishing and full dress rehearsal. So I returned to the library, where I had some supper afterwards - just some biscuits and an orange.

3) I am quite packed for the rest of the week - tomorrow I'll be going to UCD for Medic Night, and then on Saturday I will be attending our very own RCSI-MUN (Model United Nations, in which we assume roles as delegates of different countries and come up with a resolution to solve a certain crisis/problem). Then my Principal Seminar is on Tuesday, so not much time left to practice haha. Anyway, that has been my day, and I hope you enjoyed reading about it. Cheers!
